In Memory of Mike Dutton

Mike Dutton

Garry Michael “Mike” Dutton, age 76, passed away on January 8, 2025 after a thankfully brief battle with cancer. He was born in Tucumcari, New Mexico to Wesley Turner and Lee Lucille Sells Dutton on November 6, 1948. Mike was a husband, father, grandfather, lawman, farmer, and rancher.

He was a friend to all, and will be remembered for his generosity, hard work, and the fantastically detailed stories he told of his exploits. Mike loved the easy and simple ways of earlier times, which resulted in the long-standing family saying that he was born a century too late. Mike was a master mechanic, and could fix any engine, motor, or piece of equipment and have it running like new.

Some of his favorite stories were from the the Bond & Wiest Ranch in Cuervo, New Mexico, where as a young man Mike was raised by his aunt and uncle, Blanche and Stuart Holbrook. Mike attended school in Albuquerque, NM, The Judson School in Scottsdale, AZ, and Austin High School in El Paso. While at Judson School, he was on the rodeo team where he rode broncs and roped. Over the years, Mike worked as a cowboy in Punkin Center, AZ; a yard manager at 3 Way Cattle Feeders; a manager at Hudspeth County Feeders; a Deputy Sheriff in Hudspeth County, TX; a manager at Hudspeth County Reclamation; a manager at D&L Pecan Farms, and most recently as a farm worker at McCILLI Farms and J-5 Harvesting. Mike was a Boy Scout Leader; a 4-H Club Leader; a member of the Gadsden High School Football Booster Club, of the Gadsden High School FFA Booster Club, and the New Mexico Pecan Growers Association.

Mike and Diane attended Mountain View Baptist Church in El Paso, Texas, where Mike served faithfully on the Building and Grounds Committee. Mike is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Diane Houx Dutton: sons David Michael (Kera) Dutton and William Wesley (Genea) Dutton; grandchildren Krayton and Kolyn Dutton, Cole Dutton, Brandon Dutton, and Halee and Tanner Caldwell. Mike was predeceased by his grandson Pierce Turner Dutton. A celebration of life was held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 17th at the Dutton Farm, 426 S Vinton Road, Anthony, NM with pastor Larry Webb of Mountain View Baptist Church officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Disabled Outdoorsmen. Please note “In support of the Pierce Dutton Memorial Hunt” within the body of the donation or on the memo line of the check (www. disabledoutdoorsmen.com/donate). Arrangements are entrusted to Perches Funeral Homes- West of El Paso.
