Happy National Pecan Month! We here at Pecan South are so excited to be a part of your community and be a source of information for all of your pecan needs. There are many reasons for us to be excited this April when we can celebrate our favorite nut.

A recent study published by the Journal of Nutrition finds that consuming pecans as a snack improves lipids, lipoproteins, and diet quality compared with usual diet in adults at increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases. This study lasted 12 weeks while they monitored adults at risk for cardiometabolic disease levels in a randomized controlled set of adult participants. This study found that incorporating 57 g/day or more pecans into the diet instead of usual snacks for 12 weeks improved apoB, atherogenic lipoprotein subfractions, and the LP-IR in adults at risk for cardiometabolic diseases. Research suggests that eating pecans almost daily is a natural way to lower cholesterol. See the linked articles at the end for a more in-depth discussion of their findings.

The pecan is more than just a yummy snack, it can help provide a healthy alternative to snacking. We’ve all been there, sitting down, watching our favorite show, and we are feeling snackish. Alternatively, you may be slammed with a busy workday and need something that tastes good and doesn’t make you feel bad after eating it. Having a handful of pecans is the perfect solution.
