Remembering Marie Cox Storey

Former Texas Pecan Growers Association secretary, pecan supporter, and wife of the founder of The Pecan Quarterly


Marie Cox Storey, mother to Mark Storey and Lisa (Storey) Olivieri, passed away on March 3, 2023, after a long battle with severe dementia. Her final moments were spent peacefully at Crestview Memory Unit in Bryan, Texas, surrounded by family and close friends.

Known for her love of others, her community, and her beautiful grandchildren, Marie will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Marie’s family asks that she be remembered for the joy she brought to others in life not the sadness of her passing. She is survived by Mark and wife, Lyn (Russell) Storey of Avery, Texas; Lisa and husband, Mark Olivieri of College Station, Texas; and her six grandchildren, James Storey and fiancée, Ashley; Thomas Storey and wife, Taylor; Sarah Storey, Ryan Olivieri and wife, Elizabeth; Philip Olivieri, Nick Olivieri and wife, Samantha; great-granddaughter, Emily Olivieri; as well as many dear relatives and friends.

Marie was the daughter of Jeff and Mae (Lillard) Cox of Red River County Texas. She attended Avery High School and graduated in 1945. Marie worked as an inventory and file clerk at Red River Army Depot for three years after high school. James Benton Storey was her high school sweetheart and they married on September 5, 1948. Marie supported Benton throughout his academic and professional career working with him beginning with 4-H club events in Cass County Texas, then as a secretary for the head of the Meteorology Department at A&M, followed by working for the head of the Education Department at UCLA. After returning to A&M with Benton in 1958, she continued her secretarial work on campus and at home with the Texas Pecan Growers Association. They made their home in College Station in 1958, where they were active in the A&M United Methodist Church serving in many different capacities. Marie served as a Sunday school teacher for small children for over twenty years and adored her friends in the Doers Sunday school class.

The ceremony will be held at Callaway-Jones Funeral Center in Bryan, Texas Thursday, March 9, 2023, at 1 p.m., and the family will receive friends there at 12 noon, guests are asked to honor Marie by wearing pink attire. Christian burial will follow at the Aggie Field of Honor with her husband, Dr. J. Benton Storey. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to two charities that Marie loved: the March of Dimes and the Aggieland Humane Society.
