5th Annual Harvest Photo Contest Entries

The image is a man's dirty hands after harvest holding a handful of inshell pecans.

My father's—Joe Thomas—hardworking hands holding some pecans. "Harvesting pecans is something I grew up doing with my dad in Atoka and Bryan County, Oklahoma. We are probably a small operation compared to most, but it still ingrained in me the value of hard work." (Photo by Lindsay Holcomb)

We had so many fantastic entries for our 5th Annual Harvest Photo Contest that we couldn’t help but share them all with you. Participants were able to submit photos from October 15, 2022, to Jan. 11, 2023. The winning photo—featured at the top of this article—appeared on the cover of our February 2023 magazine.

Thank you to all those who sent in pictures and participated in this year’s contest!

A row of bright yellow sunflowers line the front of a pecan orchard in late summer.

I have been a serious pecan grower on my 40 acre farm since 1995, after buying land that had an abandoned pecan orchard as part of a pasture; the site had mature trees that were a mix of older improved varieties planted in the late 1960's and some native trees here and there wild grown from decades past. I have expanded and reworked the orchard with planted and grafted newer improved varieties over the years, and now have about 500 trees; many are 20 years old and younger. About 85 of all the trees in my orchard are now mature enough to produce nuts. The pecan trees in the photo background are 15-20 year old Candy, Elliot and Sumner varieties.

My wife loves sunflowers, so I planted about a 1 mile long row of them along a fence line on the border of my orchard property. They were lovely to look at and attracted many bees and birds during their peak flowering period in early August 2022. (Photo by David Breidenbach, New Roads, Louisiana)
