Letter from the Editor: “Happy National Pecan Month!”

Dear Readers,

April means it’s time to celebrate our favorite nut. Happy National Pecan Month!

We can use these next four weeks to highlight pecans’ tremendous health benefits, unique flavor, and versatility with friends, family, and customers. It’s also a time for us to connect with fellow industry members and focus on a new growing season and crop.

This month’s Pecan South includes industry news and pecan management advice. While the American Pecan Council and American Pecan Promotion Board update us on recent international marketing activities, Dr. Ted Cottrell with USDA ARS discusses ambrosia beetles, a secondary pest to pecan. Additionally, Dr. Monte Nesbitt gives a deep dive into pecan roots, an essential pecan tree organ, and shares news on upcoming Texas pecan listening sessions. And last but not least, Diane Welland, the Director of Nutrition Communications at the National Pecan Shellers Association, discusses global food trends and explains how they are giving pecans a boost.

While you’re flipping through these pages, check out our Classifieds and Business Directory at the back of the magazine. Our Business Directory is a resource for finding special products or services, while our Classifieds showcase used equipment, nursery trees, and other goods for sale from fellow industry members.

Let’s not forget about National Pecan Day, April 14th! To mark this particular day, Pecan South publishes our special consumer edition, Pieces of Pecan. The third issue of this ad-free nutty magazine is a marketing tool for your own pecan promotion and consumer outreach. This special edition showcases eye-catching recipes, feature stories, and nutrition information for pecan consumers, buyers, nutritionists, and more. This annual magazine lives permanently on our website and is accessible to all. You can also purchase a physical copy or copies, at cost, to use in your business and promotion activities.

Beyond just an ad-free magazine about pecans, we wish for Pieces of Pecan to be a resource for your business and marketing efforts. Pieces of Pecan helps consumers learn more about this nutritious nut in a fun and engaging way. Find more information about Pieces of Pecan on our website or by contacting our staff.

We truly have much to celebrate this National Pecan Month. How will you champion our favorite nut this April?

Until next time,

Catherine Clark
